Which location Should I go To?

If you are Traveling to the area from the North Carolina side of the mountain from West Jefferson, Sparta, Lansing , or if you are staying at Grayson Highlands State Park, Grindstone Campground, or even the Rugby or Mouth of Wilson area then you would probably want to use the Whitetop location, it will save you a lot of driving on a very crooked road. You can rent your bikes and pay for your shuttle there and simply catch one of the scheduled shuttles back to Whitetop when you reach Damascus.

Traveling from the North or South on interstate 81 or from the Boone N.C. or Mountain City TN. area you would probably want to go directly to the Damascus location, from there you will be shuttled to Whitetop to start the trail.

As you can see by the illustration above the Virginia Creeper Trail is a very gentle downhill from Whitetop to Damascus – About 3% at its steepest point at Whitetop Train station.

Helmets are highly recommended on the trail, and are included in the price of your bike rental. Always - BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY !

Cell phones do not work well, if at all on the Virginia Creeper Trail - Smile you can still use it as a camera!

What happens if it rains? You will get wet! Hey its the outdoors you might be lucky enough to be close to a shelter, but I would be prepared just in case. Ponchos are cheap.

Reservations are not required, but highly recommended, especially if you are planning on riding on the weekend or any holiday

Please don't litter - pack it out - leave no trace - trash cans are located at various points along the trail

The Virginia Creeper Trail is a multi use trail, horseback riders, hikers, and bicycle riders all use the trail. Please be courteous to all trail users. Always call out passing on your left when going around other trail users.

Dogs are allowed on the trail but must remain on a leash at all times. Please pick up after your pet!
